Why SETI is different than ID

Aliens Invasion, originally uploaded by Hugo*.

I stumbled across this wonderful quote on Ooblog, who stole it from Bobby Bryant on talk.origins. Probably old hat to many of you, but it tickled me pink :-).

SETI is based on the simple assumption that the nature operates elsewhere the same way it does here. ID is based on the assumption that nature doesn’t even work here.

And I guess that’s the real problem (for me) with anything like ID. Once you assume any of it is inexplicable magic, you really might as well assume it’s all inexplicable magic and go home. After you’ve opened that door, there’s certainly no sensible way to draw the lines…

And while I’m here, I’ll put in a plug for Ooblog’s casting call. They’re putting together a dramatic re-enactment of the Dover trials to be released as a series of podcasts, and are looking for people to read parts. Ever wanted to be part of a large scale “radio” drama? Go check it out!

  1. Well said.

The ID community should give up attempting to hijack SETI as a way of gaining respect they don’t deserve.

If you would like to see full time SETI station in operation, look at http://www.SETI.Net

    Regards………. Jim

  2. Thanks for the pointer. Can you point us at a good piece on the current state of play in SETI work? What’s been tried, what’s being tried, what we know and don’t know? I know enough to know what SETI stands for, but am fairly ignorant of the current situation.
