Loads o’ Open Mic Night photos
Thursday was another excellent Open Mic Night at UMM as part of the series of Open Mic Nights hosted by UMM’s Campus Activities Council Concerts Committee. (For those who are interested, these typically happen on the last Thursday of every month during the school year. Their web presence, sadly, is in shambles and out of date, so don’t count on finding anything useful there…)
This continues to be a truly wonderful series of events here at UMM, and this was a highlight even in that great set. This is the first time I’ve taken a lot of pictures at one of our Open Mic Nights, and it was quite fun. I took over 300 photos, with multiples of every performer (except me for obvious reasons). I’ve posted the better half of the 300 over on Flickr and will include a few highlights below. Unfortunately I’m crap with names on a good day with a tail wind, so there are several of these kind and talented people’s who’s names have, for whatever reason, leapt from my brain to make a new home in some deep forest loam. Sigh. Various kind folks are sending in corrections and additions, and I’ll include those here as they arrive. Please get in touch if you can fill a gap or correct an error of fact — errors of judgement are usually my problem to deal with.

The order of events (to the degree that I remember them):
* The MC (chair of CAC Concerts - forgot his name, I’m afraid).
* Jared Wahlowe, a fine musician, but in this case sharing his talent for being able to interleave his toes without using his hands… really… Gotta love this sort of stuff :-).
* Huck Brock, doing another fine original and an excellent Daniel Johnston cover.
* Joey Iverson, also doing a fine original and a really nice cover of the White Stripes’ "We are gonna be friends".
* Me :-)
* Brittany Stone, who did two nice old folk songs, "When I was on horseback" (about an Irish soldier who dies in the Easter Rebellion) and "Seeds of love".
* ? and Ricky Nolan, who did a reading from The philosophy of Andy Warhol.
* Kate Rogers, who did "Wildwood flower" a la The Carter Family and "Amazing grace".
* Rene?. He did a Ghost Family cover (I should try to listen to their CD) and another cover who’s name I don’t remember.
* Eagan Heath (left) assisted by John Hanson. Eagan started with an amazing cover/update of "Give me that old time religion", complete with crazy shirtless dancing at the end. I took about a zillion photos of that ’cause it was just so cool. He then did a fine cover of another old song that I can’t now remember.
* A fellow whose name I don’t know, and who I didn’t photograph much because I had to run out to the restroom (an unavoidable consequence of drinking a liter of water during the event).
* Alex Wanna, who did a very fine cover of the White Stripes’ cover of Dolly Parton’s "Jolene" followed by a very powerful song for a friend of his who is presumably headed off to Iraq.
* I don’t remember her name, or what she sang, which is sad.

P.S. The color on most of these looks significantly better on a Mac using a browser (like Safari) that understands color spaces. Firefox is clueless about color spaces regardless of platforms (which sucks), and Windows (and apps on Windows) are clueless about color spaces in general (which, sadly, isn’t surprising).
