We’re off to see the wizard!

We're off to see the wizard!
Tomorrow we leave on our grand adventure in the UK! The house is mostly packed up and we’re pretty much ready to go. We’ll be spending some cool time with WeatherGirl’s mum for a few days, and then head down to Colchester to find a place to live and school for Sub-Evil Boy.

The official purpose of the sabbatical is to do computer science research in evolutionary computation with cool people at the University of Essex in Colchester. I’m sure I’ll also be working on my blogging and photography quite a bit as well, and hopefully being a better on-line citizen (more time for comments and such).

This is the poster I made to hang by my office door for the year away to remind people why I never seem to answer when they knock. I wrestled quite a while with this because I kept trying to make a text document with a few pictures added. Lying in bed the other night it finally flipped and I realized that I wanted to make a document that was mostly pictures with a little text added, and voila! Probably comes from reading Scott McCloud’s excellent Understanding comics this summer, but it was fun!

Heading out

Orca spray
He’s heading out, and so are we! We leave tomorrow for nearly a year living in the UK! It’ll be wonderful, assuming we survive all the getting ready to go. Probably only one more post before we leave (and that’ll be a silly one), and then no posts, comments (or comment approval - sorry!), or photos for a while. I’ll be back, though.

The photo is from our wildlife cruise in Alaska last summer, where we were fortunate to see several orcas fairly close up. (See, for example, "Orca!" which I posted while we were still in Alaska.) I caught this one as it steamed away from us towards the afternoon sun.

Packing, packing, packing

A long and winding road
We leave Morris Monday afternoon — less than three days away! Packing up lots of things (esp. books) to make room for Our Kind Renters, and tomorrow we begin the painful process of finding out just how much of our stuff won’t fit in our luggage. Ugh.

This will be a wonderful year, but getting ready and going is enough to kill us all!

The picture is another from our trip to Alaska almost exactly one year ago. I still have (literally) thousands of unprocessed photos from that trip (something else to work on over sabbatical), but I jumped around a processed a few (including this one) that my folks wanted to use in a cool photobook they’re putting together for the family.

Horrible bridge collapse in Minneapolis
I assure you that packing to move for a year sucks rocks, but this evening’s horrible bridge collapse in Minneapolis puts it all in perspective. Here’s hoping that all the people we know in the Cities (and their families and loved ones) are OK. I’m quite sure that there will be UMM students and alum that were affected fairly directly by this.
