I’m exhausted and am going to bed, but it’s been a truly amazing night. McCain was gracious in a (crushing) defeat, and Obama was humble, inclusive, and inspiring in his acceptance. It was in so many ways a night to be proud of the U.S. after so many years of cringe-inducing stupidity and greed.

For me the most powerful image of the night was Obama’s and Biden’s families on the stage together after Obama’s acceptance speech in Chicago. There we saw black and white children hugging and celebrating together on stage, interacting with a comfort that would have inspired beatings, or worse, in the living memory of many who voted. These children will walk the halls of the White House, not as tourists, but as residents. These children’s lives are one giant step closer to the dream espoused in the Civil Rights Movement, in the Suffragette Movement, in the Emancipation Proclamation, and in the Declaration of Independence. These children represent our future, as do all children.

Obama was elected on the promise that he can help us make a better world for all our children. Now we all have an obligation to work with the people we elected to make good on those promises.

Thanks to the great folks that came over to watch the returns with us, and for all the friends and family that we shared this with on-line and on the phone. It was an honor to have shared this historic night with you all.

Today has no doubt been one of the longest and most unpleasant day’s in John McCain’s professional life. He’s been smacked, and smacked soundly, and lost what is almost certainly his last chance to be President of the United States.

That doesn’t mean he can’t still at least one more great service for his country.

He can try to return the Republican Party to their senses. The party of Eisenhower and Lincoln has been hijacked by wingnuts who would paint me a commie wacko for believing bizarre ideas like women and blacks are people, education and science are key to the health and future of the country, genuine love and affection is a precious thing wherever we find it, the founding fathers meant it when they emphasized the separation of church and state, and the federal government has a vital role in investing in the future of the country. These aren’t radical leftist ideas – these are ideas that were the bread and butter of Eisenhower style Republicans, ideas that grow directly from the ideals laid out by the founding fathers. The Republican Party, however, has been carted off into crazy land by deeply fundamentalist, irrational, anti-competence nutjobs.

And it’s not just me that feels that way. Colin Powell is one of the most articulate and best known Republican defectors in this election, but he’s just the public face of a much bigger discontent with their party. Tonight the Republican party suffered a shattering defeat tonight on almost every front, and alarm bells must be ringing up and down conservative corridors all across the country.

I’m no Republican, I’m absolutely thrilled with the results tonight, and I’m a lot more likely to vote for a donkey than an elephant. I do, however, have a vested interest in a healthy, vigorous democracy, as do we all. And that isn’t best served by a single dominant party with only a crippled opposition party. Just as importantly, if the Republican party can be brought to its senses, it allows a much more realistic spectrum of political discussion which is vital as we face a broad array of shifting challenges.

So McCain can make yet another valuable contribution to our country. He can help fix one of the two major political parties in this country at a point where they desperately need the help. With the help of defectors like Powell he can bring together the sensible folks in his party, the people that can do basic math, balance budgets, value competence over cronyism, and focus on progress instead of division.

McCain’s concession speech was a gracious view of the man that inspired so much enthusiasm 8 years ago and across his career. I hope he can make something good out of the the bitter lessons of this election and the last eight years, and work to heal his party (although maybe not too quickly).

Both Obama and McCain have important work to do, and we all benefit if they succeed. Wish them well.

Lacking the time or neural function to generate any new content, I’ll instead pretend to be engaging in some sort of hip new mash-up by dropping two wildly different videos on you. Connections? Nope. Cool synthesis that comments on the post-modern state? Doubt it. Worth the time? Probably.

The first is a really fine piece of election season film making (thank to Pharyngula for the tip):

Favorite quotes: Cheney reminding us that “Some people lie” (speaking from experience there?) and Pat Buchanan saying that McCain will “make Cheney look like Gandhi”. Wow – that’s something I really don’t want to see.

Then, after you’ve found the tissue box or finished smashing the crap out of the couch cushion in anger and frustration, you can lighten up with this bit of silliness courtesy of Joe R.:

I think it’s arguably a bit long (they felt like they had to get the whole lecture into one song), and watching the “dancers” gets a bit painful in places. Still, it’s well written and fun, and I like the chorus. It’s cool to see people trying different ways of getting the word out and, for better or worse, I suspect that more people will learn a little physics from this sort of thing than from “normal” sources. There are 34,925 people following the Mars Phoenix lander on Twitter, and over 4,000 (as of today) following CERN. Hopefully all this is a cool sign for the future of a populace engaged in science!

And this sort of stuff really makes certain academics nervous — they worry that somehow the only way they’ll keep their job is to do this kind of thing in class — and that’s gotta be worth something.

Hmmm… Applying vaunted American know-how to find new solutions to the problem of energy independence? What an odd, odd thought, especially when McCain supports a tiny, slow band-aid that … well … won’t really help at all.

We were in Fargo a few days ago buying a car. We sold our one and only car when we went abroad, and are currently on borrowed wheels. There was serious discussion of not even getting a car, or perhaps leasing a car for the winter months while going without a petrol powered vehicle in the summer when we can bike around town. In the end, though, we decided to go ahead and buy a shiny blue Honda Fit. (This is the second time we’ve bought the exact same car as my sister a year or two after she bought hers. We’re not very original, I’m afraid. That, and my sister rocks!)

The Honda dealer said that the demand for Civics, hybrids, and Fits has been really high, and they’ve had periods where they haven’t had any Civics to show people, including used ones! (And this is North Dakota, where I suspect trucks have long out-numbered compacts.) Given that most people won’t keep a car for all of the 7 years it will be before we see any of the off-shore oil from McCain’s proposal, Obama’s plan seems to be much more in touch with the mood of the populace.

What I’d really like is for the U.S. people (and government) to realize that there’s real value in basic scientific research, and understand that kind of research is going to have to be an important part of any solution to the current energy and climate problems.

While in Fargo we also bought Sub-Evil a new bike, and will probably buy a new bike for WeatherGirl in the next week or two. This, combined with the fact that mine is getting a substantial tune-up at the moment, means we’ll all be on two spiffy wheels as much as possible, at least when the weather allows.

Just did a pile o’ dishes and listened to a SciAm podcast featuring the remarks of Robert Rosner (head of Argonne National Laboratory). The short version is that science (and, I would argue, education in general) is a matter of necessity plus vision. First, science is not a luxury, but instead a necessity:

Without the science base, you cannot build an industrial base.

Second, science requires long term vision and public and private support in in basic research. It typically takes decades for culture changing technologies to move from the basic idea to ubiquity; Rosen gives as examples railroads, airplanes, transistors, computers, the internet, and lasers. The question then is

How do you convince the politics and the public that that lag in fact is real and that if you don’t make the investments … today … we’ll be lagging things that other folks that are making the investments

Rosen is (quite reasonably) focussed specifically on the question of support for science, but points out that this is part of a larger trend of irrationality in the U.S.:

But we all know that in the United States there are long traditions of anti-intellectualism, of what the Times today also refer to as anti-rationalism, the idea that there really are no facts, it’s all opinion, the idea that scientists [are] just playing their sand box and don’t connect with anybody.

What it really comes down to is a distressingly common failure for Americans to see any form of education (science or humanities, K12 or university) as a necessary investment in the strength and future of our society and country. For me this has become a useful litmus test to separate sensible conservatives (who understand the economic necessity of investment in key areas) from the wingnuts that have come to dominate the Republican party (who spout anti-intellectual nonsense while shredding schools and lining the pockets of themselves and their friends).

Eisenhower understood the practical necessity of an interstate road system, and encouraged and supported that investment. All Shrub can seem to invest in is Halliburton and their ilk.

Things to think (and ask) about in this happy election season.

You all know I stay up late at night worrying about possible career opportunities for Our Fearless Leader upon his impending retirement from the Oval Office next year. Given his broad-minded and impeccable taste and his keen intellect, I’d rather fancied him as a gallery director, maybe for something like MoMA, which would benefit from both his gravitas and sense for the cutting-edge.

This video, however, pretty much scuppers that plan. Never good to be caught making up completely fictional and inaccurate provenance for a painting, especially one that has pride of place in that most public of home offices.

I’ll obviously have to get my thinking cap out and consider the matter further. Ideas?
