Class with the PRCA

Today Sub Evil Boy and I took a class with the Prairie Renaissance Cultural Alliance. We learnt how to make a necklace using hemp twine and a variety of beads. Both of us came home with a piece of jewellery we could wear. There were nine of us in the class, a wide range of ages and boys as well as girls. A great deal of fun was had by all.

We’re back on the air - Yee-ha!

With the new semester we are back on air with live shows on KUMM 89.7 FM and not just the loop. Our show, Unhindered by Talent, naturally, is Sundays from 2pm till 4pm. (That’s Central Standard Time, we’re 6 hours behind the UK.) Our show is pretty eclectic, given the range of our tastes, so you never know what might be broadcast. Phi has our playlists up somewhere, perhaps he’ll post the link here so you can check them out for yourselves. For many years our signal merely reached the cows in Cyrus but now you can listen on-line. One day, when the FCC pulls its finger out, the Tower Project will happen and the cows in Starbuck will join the audience. Go here to get the skinney.

I agree with Phi on this one

We went to see Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events and it was an unfortunate evening. Visually stunning, the plot was pretty lifeless and sat there limp on the screen hoping you’d ignore its defects and be wowed by the pictures. I don’t think so. There was a lot of talent involved but the script just didn’t cut it. And as for what the writer did to Violet at the end (helpless female who needs saving by the hero) that looked a lot like character assassination.

Read the books, you’ll have a lot more fun.

Cold Blood

This is a really cool serial on the BBC’s Radio 7 written by Simon Bovey (sp?) . With flavours of both The Thing and The X Files it is proving very creepy and quite addictive. I’ve listened to 3 of 5 parts so far and am relishing finding out how it all ends. Unfortunately I’m listening to it on their Listen Again feature and parts 1 and 2 have already cycled off the page so I can’t hook you up. I’m sure it’ll show up again so it might be worth keeping an eye on their site.

BBC Radio 7 can be found here. There are lots of great dramas, mysteries, Sci Fi, etc.

The Motorcycle Diaries

Disappointing. There are some beautiful vistas and a couple of scenes that are quite telling, for example the conversation with the displaced communist couple and the work in the leper colony. Unfortunately the two main characters aren’t very interesting nor believable. Why are they on this adventure together? Their relationship seems quite contrived and barely existent. One is quite a frat boy and the other spends his time staring moody at the world around him.

The Price of Motherhood: Why the Most Important Job in the World is Still the Least Valued The Price of Motherhood and I highly recomend it. See here for my previous comments.

The only negative comment I’d make is that a couple of the references were listed as personal communications which is fine when you’re reporting the opinions of others but when your using them as references for facts I don’t think that’s appropriate.

Read this book!

Browser Update

It appears that RealPlayer and its plugins now works as it should with Camino so I can return to a one browser universe. Yee ha! The only niggle is that when downloading an audio file it doesn’t automatically open as it did in Safari. Not sure why.

You should be watching …

Lost, showing Wednesdays at 7pm (CST) on ABC. A very cool show, well worth all the space it is taking on my Tivo.

The opening pilot episode was quite something else. On first viewing it was totally absorbing and visually stunning. On second viewing, with the experience of having seen following episodes, it generated a wealth of questions. This story has sucked me in and I look forward to learning more about the characters’ histories and seeing how they evolve as they have to deal with life on the island.

Dared and Done: The Marriage of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning Dared and Done. The Marriage of Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning by Julia Markus. I bought this book several years ago (part of a growing collection of books about successful and interesting women) and it disappeared on to a shelf somewhere in the house. I rediscovered it today and read the first chapter. A relationship that has become more myth than reality. I look forward to learning more about the reality.

MLK day in the US

Phi gave his talk about the music of the civil rights movement this evening. A great selection of music was shared with a group of about 15 people who gathered in the Prairie Renaissance Cultural Centre. The music was wide ranging including We look like men of war, Strange Fruit, I wonder when I’ll be called a man, Walk over God’s heaven etc.

Phi posted about this later on his page here
