Millions

Best movie I’ve seen in eons. A wonderful mixture of real life and fantasy. The acting was great especially by the kids. It was nice to see a northern English town portrayed as something other than bleak and dreary. The story is sad in places as the two young boys deal with their mother’s death but it ends on a hopeful note.

I highly recommend this one.

Kiwanis Talent Show

Sub Evil Boy took part in the fourth and final heat of the Kiwanis Talent Show this evening. There were only four acts participating, 3 singers and a dance troupe.

Sub Evil Boy sang two songs a cappella, Fat Fly, a song he wrote with his dad and Worms a traditional little ditty that he had heard on a Pogues CD.

A third place finish didn’t earn him any prize money but it did qualify him for the grand final that will be held Friday 8th July during Prairie Pionneer Days.

After a three week toddle around the UK, we’re back stateside. Hopefully when I’ve caught up with all the stuff that needs taking care of I’ll put up some posts on our adventures. Most will probably be backdated.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Not bad. As a fan of the original radio show I suppose all other versions of HGttG pale into obscurity by comparison. While I adore Stephen Fry, and think Harry Potter sounds fabulous when he reads it, he’s just not Peter Jones.

There are quite a few fun moments and the movie passes the time nicely if not particularly, ‘oh wow!’. My favourite moment is when the improbability drive kicks in and they all end up as wool dolls. Arthur Dent throwing up wool is timeless!

The Interpreter

Disappointing. With all the talent involved in this movie you’d have thought they could have made something better than this. So much of the movie was quite predictable that I was not sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next.

The best sequence involved a series of characters and story lines all intersecting on a bus. This sequence was incredibly tense and emotionally involving and demonstrated how short the movie fell from its potential.

Yuckiest moment of the movie was when the tall willowy white woman tells the older black president how he’s failed his country and what a disappointment he’s been. Yuck, yuck, yuck. What were they thinking?
