War of the Worlds (SPOILER)

Scary! Despite its weaknesses this movie is well worth checking out. The special effects are out of this world as you’d expect from Steven Spielberg. Parts were incredibly tense and very scary. On the down side the prologue and epilogue didn’t really connect to what came between them and the fact that none of the main characters was dead by the end was completely unbelievable given all that had gone before. If the son or daughter had died the film would have carried a greater emotional weight and been more honest to how the story was told. As for the alien craft being burried beneath the surface for as long as suggested, I didn’t believe it for a moment but I didn’t particularly mind this contrivance as watching them emerge was quite something.

Batman Begins

Pow! A better Batman movie than your average Batman movie and I must say Christian Bale was quite a surprise. He’s proving to be one of the most versatile young actors around. There was lots to like about this movie. The toys were fab, great bad guys Freeman/Caine rocked and the female lead was not a wimp. I found some of the fight scenes visually confusing but fortunately that did not take up too much screen time. You should definitely check this one out.

How the world works

And do I like how it works! I point out some absurd behaviour and moan about stupid human tricks and Phi does the research and posts on his blog. (He writes so well and with much attention to detail.)

Be glad the world works this way. If you had to rely on my blog the post would be very short and occasionally unhinged. Might feel cathartic but it’s not particularly useful.

On the recent Pat Robertson horror, how about some of those supposed moral right wing conservative Christians standing up and pointing out there’s this article of faith called the ten commandments, one of which says thou shalt not kill. I think it’s about time this hate monger retire from the scene and seek some mental health care.

How about all CBN’s viewers refuse to donate to a supposed religious organisation whose leader advocates murder?

After all the moralising following the London bombing, demanding that the Muslim community condemn the action of the suspected bombers, perhaps Christians should follow their own advice and make it clear they condemn the advocacy of premeditated murder. Silence speaks volumes.

We’ve seen the new school building …

… and it looked fabulous. (About 20 years to late but at least we got there, finally.)

Our tax dollars at work and they appear to be well spent. Sub Evil Boy was pretty pumped. The true test will begin next Thursday, though, when a hoard of young children descend on the place and put it through its paces.

Woman’s Inhumanity to Woman

Written by Phyllis Chesler. While I found this book relied a little too much on personal anecdotes and could have done with a serious edit to tighten it up, it addresses a very important topic not much discussed in relation to why misogyny continues.

The situations discussed in the book were valuable examinations of relationships that are important to women, but I think it would have greatly improved the case if the author had found a way to explore multiple points of view on a given example.

Well worth a read, just skim when you’ve got the point.

Portia, Super Huntress Kitty

Well, maybe I’m exaggerating a little, but Portia certainly seems to have undergone a personality transformation.

Once upon a time Portia was a curious kitten and bounded around in the undergrowth around our house chasing dragonflies and other creatures. Then she morphed into regal indoor lap kitty to whom the great outdoors was a very scary place, to be avoided at all costs.

But today, today she is spending the night outside super explorer kitty. It’s quite amazing. Open the front or back door and she zooms out before you can say ‘Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No it’s super kitty!!’

Latest Turq health report. The death spiral continues but at three years and counting don’t expect it to end anytime soon. His symptoms continue to deteriorate and it’s hard to tell how well/unwell he feels. Last vet visit he’d actually gained weight. At the beginning of the summer we had thought his days were numbered but on current form he might actually make it to the new year.
