March of the Penguins

Fabulous. Sub Evil Boy waxes eloquent over here. I’ll just say it’s one of the best movies I’ve seen this year. The awe and wonder of the natural world is incredible. This movie brought a tear to my eye.

Go penguins!

If you have young kids check out the book Solo by Paul Geraghty. Same story, beautifully illustrated.

The 40 Year Old Virgin

Overrated. Hugely. Skidding from embarrassingly awful to the odd flash of funny, the critics have lost their minds when they rave about this movie. I suppose if you love adolescent boy humour you’ll be a happy camper.

The Super Huntress Kitty Saga Continues

As previously reported on 19th August 2005 our indoor, lap-loving behemoth of an arthritic cat, Portia, has undergone a complete personality transplant. But wonders never cease. Our mild mannered super heroine is going mano-a-mano with the big boys. Clearly she’s decided that the neighbourhood has gone to rack and ruin and it’s her job to fix it. Woe betide any feral ragamuffin cat who decides that they fancy a stroll across our lawn. Portia is on to them in a trice, scaring the you-know-what out of them and ensuring they beat a hasty retreat off her property.

It’s astounding!!!!!!! There aren’t enough exclamation marks for the awe this strikes.

Then there are are the night long expeditions when the weather isn’t fit for man nor beast and our mild manner kitty is out there doing whatever it is she’s decided needs doing. Holely molely.

Turq is currently playing the role of lap cat as he tends towards his end date.

Hurricanes, Hurricanes Everywhere …

… and not a hope of one here.

For which we are truly thankful.

Our son was pleased to learn that you need to be on the coast to experience the full force of one of these babies. Though, of course, where we live is tornado territory.

This whole weather calamity is depressing and the contribution of human failure is very irritating. The people of New Orleans have not been well served by their public officials, from the Federal level on down, and deserve better.

One of the things we’ve had the misfortune to learn through all this is that the reorganisation creating the Department of Homeland Security did not add to the security of the state. These guys couldn’t find their way out of a paper bag. Let’s hope those in the corridors of power are paying attention and put some effort into doing their jobs properly. They’re certainly being paid the big bucks, let’s get some value from our hard earned tax dollars.

Four Brothers

Formulaic. Sounded like it had lots of potential but didn’t work for me. I was quite disappointed. The one bright spot was Terrence Howard as Lt. Green. The Lieutenant rocked: what presence and delivery! He was the one character I actually cared about. A couple of clever plot twists stopped me falling asleep.

The Monkey Has Landed!

Over the summer, as supplies of my favourite beverage dwindled, things began to tend to the pretty desperate. Being able to choose from a selection of three teas was not much fun.

Fortuitously once the orders were in, via our handy dandy internet connection, it did not take long for the delivery services to work their magic and boxes of treasure appear at our doorstep.

Golden Monkey is back!

Signs of Winter’s Approach

Portia’s wiggling backside and laser like gaze brought our attention to the current sport of squirrels - burying nuts in our lawn. Silly little buggers, how on earth will they find them again when there’s several feet of snow outside our front door?

This last week we’ve had rather balmy temperatures and a wonderful sunny sky. Doesn’t feel like the great white out is on its way yet but time does march on and the seasons will change.

Loudon Wainwright III in Morris!

The first event in this season’s performing arts programme was the mighty Mr. Wainwright and it was a very enjoyable night’s entertainment. Great songs. Lots of humour and despair. A tiny peek into the heart of a man.

Happy birthday to me!
Happy birthday to me!
Happy birthday dear me!
Happy birthday to me!

Now I’m supposed to understand: life, the universe, and everything but I must confess much is still a complete mystery. For example, who on earth though Shrub would be a good US President?

My sweetie designed me my very own t-shirt. It says ‘Make tea, not war’, and reflects two things that are very close to my heart. It took two days to do all the calligraphy followed by the image prepping and preening. Demonstrating our consumerist tendencies we’ve slapped the calligraphy on a cornucopia of products at Cafepress for like-minded individuals to purchase.

Go. Buy. Spread the word.

Must Love Dogs

Date movie. Given the reviews we’d expected a dog and to be bored silly. Not true! While not the greatest of its genre, this movie made us laugh out loud and passed the time quite pleasantly. You do have to pay attention though, most of the laughs are in the dialogue and they don’t stop to cue you, ‘that was a joke it’s okay to laugh now’.
