Jack is back!

I’m going to have serious stress issues for the next 19 hours of 24. They’re dropping like flies already, yikes. One of my favourites has already bitten the dust and another is hanging on by their fingertips. (I’m not saying who just in case, dear reader, you haven’t seen the first five hours.)

I love this show, flaws et al. While each season has its weak moments, they still manage to get me hooked for the rollercoast ride they embark on.

Just visit the unhinderedbytalent.com shop and buy any number of products emblazoned with the phrase Make Tea, Not War.

Hand calligraphed, by my sweetie as a present for my last birthday, it combines a great sentiment with wonderful design and pen skill.

Who the heck is this guy?

I just listened to the second hour of Friday’s midday program from Minnesota Public Radio. They broadcast a speach made Monday, that’s MLK day 2006, where a past presidential candidate railed against George Bush’s illegal acts. (I went here to listen to it but it may not be there for long.)

There was passion. There was intelligence. There was integrity. There was someone who would have made a decent US president. And who was this person? Would you believe Al Gore? No, either would I but there he was doing what the current Democratic leadership should be doing but are too spineless to try.

Have scientists managed to transplant personalities and not told us about it? Perhaps there is hope after all.

Brilliant. The best movie I’ve seen in a long time. A whole host of story threads interweaving to create an image of the current relationship between the West and the Middle East. This movie recognises the complexity of real life and let’s you view the issues from multiple points of view. A definite must-see movie that raises many questions and actually encourages you to engage your brain as well as your emotions.

Great to see Alexander Siddig again.

The Chronicles of Narnia

Slow. A faithful retelling of C.S. Lewis’, The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. Great for younger children but there’s not quite enough going on for anyone else. There were some great emotional moments, like the death scene (I didn’t think it suffered through lack of gore, unlike others) and Tilda Swinton is pitch perfect as the witch.

As for the whole Christian allegory issue, it’s a brouhaha in a teacup. I didn’t see it when I read the book as a child and I didn’t see very much of it as an adult. This fantasy world seems to be just that too me. Eye of the beholder seems the relevant tag.

Beginning in the Basement

So instead of buying a bigger house or adding an addition to our humble abode we’ve decided to try and make our stuff fit the home we actually own and not some fantasy version that we imagine in our wildest dreams. To do this we have to get rid of stuff. This is very difficult. We’re pack rats of the highest order and parting with stuff is such ’sweet sweet sorrow’. Actually it’s probably closer to ripping our innards out without the help of anesthetic.

Anyway, the show is on the road and we began in the basement. It was a mess. We have an unfinshed basement and for a couple of years we’ve just been dumping stuff down there without much serious thought to longevity.

After much hard work and numerous trips to the dump,as well as mounds of recycling, we radically overhauled the state of the basement. You can find things down there now! There are still items that need to be disposed of, like the original house windows, but otherwise it is done.

Angel Food Cake report

Well, even if I do say so myself, the cake was very yummy. I liked the consistency, very cakey. Sub Evil Boy seemed happy and he ate his cake unadulterated by sauce.

… I’ve just put an angel food cake in the oven. Of course, it couldn’t be any old recipe, it had to be as Wendel would have made it. He was very particular about that. Let’s hope it lives up to that illustrious angel food cake auteur. Keep your fingers crossed for me. We’ll know if it looks any good in about an hour.

A History of Violence

Maybe overrated. Can’t quite make my mind up whether this is one of the best films of the year or the greatest con on offer. Just what is this movie really about? The true nature of men? You can’t escape your past? Seeing how far you can push the envelop and get away with it? Movie cliche abuse?

Whatever it is about, you should still see this film, regardless. The physical and psychological transformation that Mortensen undergoes is stunning.
