Pan’s Labyrinth

Brilliant. This movie was so spectacularly good that I definitely want to buy a copy. My brain was most definitely engaged: intellect and emotions. Oh wow, so many elements to think about and ideas to process. It is so satisfying to see a movie that clearly demonstrates there is an intelligent film maker at work. I won’t say much about content because I think there is value in being unspoiled when you watch for the first time.

Scary. This is exactly the kind of movie that scares the hell out of me. Lots of building tension, mystery, subtle use of music, created by people who know how to engage the old grey cells. I had the opportunity to see El Orfanato on the big screen with a huge audience. It was intense. We all fed off each other’s reactions and it really ramped up the tension. Fantastic.

Quantum of Solace

Disappointing. When you have an actor, like Daniel Craig, who can do the serious dramatic stuff you’d think you’d write a script that utilised his full skill set. Sadly this 007 movie veers from one set piece to another without engaging the emotions very much at all. Love the title, shame the script didn’t live up to it. Fingers crossed for the next one.

Fascinating. I have a faint memory of reading a positive review of this movie many moons ago so we went to see it when it was in town. I’m really glad ye olde memory hasn’t completely burned out for twas a very cool movie indeed. It’s pretty much the prequel to Genghis Khan’s life. A fascinating story I knew very little of. The cinematography was stunning.
