Yes, Houston we have completion!

This has sat in draft form on my computer for ages so I thought I better post it quick just in case it evaporates and ends up in the virtual ether.

afghan

Yes, finally after years and years of work I have completed my afghan-come-quilt project. Little did I know all those years ago when I began this small project how long and tortuous a road it would be to get the bugger done!

The afghan material was woven in such a way that it was amenable to being cross stitched on. However due to the weave each cross stitch had to be completed before beginning the next and that meant I couldn’t work up a head of steam and speed along.

The border is alternating stitched and not stitched squares. I stitched 13 squares in the border using my own design created from elements in the main panels. Each border square used two different colour combinations from the main panels.

Four panels in the finished piece included information about my family, including our names plus the date embroidered. The other panels are all based on quilt patters. Two examples are shown above. They are, on the left, Lone Star, and on the right, Log Cabin. I used a chart by Canterbury Designs called, Quilts In A Day (Or Two), designed by Joyce B. Drenth.

The backing fabric is a patchwork pattern and helps protect the skin from the rough fabric that is the afghan. Quilting is achieved through ties using the cotton thread that I stiched with.

Clare and Ray’s 25th Anniversary Sampler

One of the items I submitted to the embroidery exhibit earlier this year was an anniversary sampler I stitched for my friends Clare and Ray.

The piece was designed by Barbara Rakosnik, though I made a couple of changes to include the date, text and bottom band. The materials are 29 count Glenshee Linen with Kreinik Soie d’Alger.

I really like Barbara’s deigns and classes. Her instructions are well written and very adaptable. I used another piece that she taught as a class, Rose Without Thorns, as a wedding sampler for friends. Sadly the couple did not remain together and after a stay of a year or so in Arkansas the piece has returned to me.

The big day arrives!

So I’ve not posted in a while because a project I’ve been working on for the last year has finally come to fruition and it has needed much time and attention.

I’ve been working with a small group of women to bring the Embroiderers’ Guild of America’s 18th National Exhibit to our home on the prairie. The exhibit finally opened on Saturday 28th January. We are so thrilled. Not only do we have the EGA exhibit but we have organised several other shows to compliment the main exhibit plus a whole host of events every weekend.

To learn more about all the fun events we’ve hosted and those that we have planned in the coming weeks check out our web page.

Opening weekend netted us about 300 visitors and we’ve continued in a similar vein. If you’re passing through town you should definitely check it out, it’s an amazing exhibit.
