A reminder for American tourists

Going, coming, and waiting

Emma Clarke has been doing the official voice overs for the London Underground since 1999, and she has a page of spoofs she’s recorded in her sillier moments. Definitely fun; I was fond of this one, clearly aimed at Sub-Evil and me:

We’d like to remind our American tourist friends, that you are almost certainly talking too loud.

Given that WeatherGirl’s initial impression of me was “a loud, obnoxious American” (a position 18 years of marriage has only slightly softened), it does seem likely that it applies.

  1. Not to be a grammar nazi (yeah right), but shouldn’t it be “clearly aimed at Sub-Evil and me”?

  2. Damn you and your evilly correct ways! I’m always making that mistake, and my sister is always correcting me on it. Now it’s happened in public. Arggghhhhh!

Thanks for pointing it out, though. I’ll go fix it.

  3. Haha!

That is AWESOME! Thanks for the pointer! It is a shame she lost her job over those funny little bits because they are, as us obnoxiously loud Americans say “a hoot”.

Emma’s voice is one of my fondest memories of being in London.

  4. touchingly accurate. Did she really lose her job for this? (well worth it, I’d say – she might do anything, go anywhere!) I am forwarding to all my dear London friends. Thanks Nic!

  5. Did she lose her job?!? I hadn’t heard anything to that effect until CoryQ’s comment, and there wasn’t anything on her web site about it. That would be really sad if it were true, though.

  6. There are brief mentions of it in her blog, but here is an explicit reference to it.

Though, the Transportation folks, I believe, officially said there were ‘major delays’ in her contract renewal. Personally, I think it would be easier to join in on the joke than to have to go through the effort of revamping all the voice work, but what do I know?

  7. Thanks a ton for the link! Man, that’s really goofy and someone just needs to relax a little. Maybe I should volunteer to be the new voice of the London Underground :-) ?
