I can vouch for Pick of the week

WeatherGirl was plugging Pick of the week on BBC’s Radio 4, and I can definitely second the motion. If you’ve not had much experience with the the incredible variety of programming on the Beeb’s many incarnations, this is an excellent short introduction, providing one person’s summary of the week’s highlights.

One thing to be clear about is that it is not the five most popular songs on Radio 1, and won’t typically have more than snippets of music here and there. It instead focusses on reporting, drama, and other “text” programs of a range and quality rarely found here in the U.S.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I don’t listen to a lot of this sort of radio, BBC or not, mostly because I have too damn much music I want/need to be listening to. That said, though, I’m always happily sucked in if I happen to be around when WeatherGirl has Pick of the week running when I’m around.

Currently listening to John Coltrane’s excelent My favorite things, another cool Xmas gift. Thanks to Mom and Dad!

“Wrong radio station” by Zephaniah rocks!

I’m finally wading through the John Peel tribute concerts the BBC did, and I just heard Benjamin Zephaniah’s piece “Wrong radio station” and it’s absolutely brilliant. A little digging suggests it hasn’t been released yet :-(. The way they announced it suggested that it will appear on the forthcoming album Naked, but the amazon.co.uk entry doesn’t list a track with that name, so I’m not sure.

If you want to hear it, it’s about 2 hours and 16 minutes into part 2 of the Keep It Peel show (counting the documentary as Part 1). I also found an I Reggae interview page with Real Audio versions of it that my computer won’t play :-(. You can also check out Zephaniah’s page which has some pretty cool stuff. (I really liked his letter explaining his reasons for not accepting an OBE – in the media section.)
