{"id":361,"date":"2006-07-17T22:31:59","date_gmt":"2006-07-18T03:31:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/UnhinderedByTalent.com\/Phi\/?p=361"},"modified":"2006-07-17T22:33:33","modified_gmt":"2006-07-18T03:33:33","slug":"robert-fitzgerald-candidate-for-us-senate-in-minnesota","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/UnhinderedByTalent.com\/Phi\/archives\/2006\/07\/17\/robert-fitzgerald-candidate-for-us-senate-in-minnesota\/","title":{"rendered":"Robert Fitzgerald, candidate for U.S. Senate in Minnesota"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nicmcphee\/192287583\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.flickr.com\/60\/192287583_e598738748_m.jpg?resize=240%2C160\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" alt=\"Robert Fitzgerald, candidate for U.S. Senate\" align='right' hspace='10' vspace='10' data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nOne of the recurring features of small town summer parades in the mid-west is politics, and yesterday&#8217;s Prairie Pioneer Days parade here in Morris must have had 8-10 different politicians ranging from the local sherriff up to candidates for U.S. Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Included in this motley crew was Robert Fitzgerald, who was a student of mine as an undergrad here at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.morris.umn.edu\/\">UMM<\/a>.  Now, several years later, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.votefitzgerald.org\/\">he&#8217;s running for U.S. senate<\/a> as an independent here in Minnesota, and was back in town for the parade.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s got that politician&#8217;s smile down, doesn&#8217;t he?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nicmcphee\/192280312\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.flickr.com\/68\/192280312_12ef0da043_m.jpg?resize=240%2C160\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" alt=\"Working the crowd\" align='left' vspace='10' hspace='10' data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Here he&#8217;s working the crowd, and actually talking about policy issues, which I didn&#8217;t hear <em>any<\/em> of the other candidates do.  Klobuchar&#8217;s people at least passed out a little card with her key policy points on it, but everyone else just passed out stickers and candy and carefully avoiding conveying <em>any<\/em> useful information.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps following in the footsteps of a previous senator from Minnesota, he&#8217;s gone for the big, brightly colored campaign bus, which definitely was an eye-catcher in the parade.  It would have helped its effectiveness if that bus had been full of supporters (or at least not empty), but such is life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nicmcphee\/192284998\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.flickr.com\/68\/192284998_38e77b8015_m.jpg?resize=240%2C160\" width=\"240\" height=\"160\" alt=\"Another brightly colored campaign bus\" align='right' hspace='10' vspace='10' data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>No idea if I&#8217;ll vote for him in November &#8211; I just haven&#8217;t done the level of homework necessary to make that sort of decision.  I can certainly say, though, that he&#8217;s vastly <em>cooler<\/em> than 90-muchly-percent of the politicians currently in D.C.  He was an exec at our <a href=\"http:\/\/kumm.org\/\">student radio station<\/a>, and still comes back to concerts that the station sponsors once or twice a year.
