{"id":369,"date":"2006-08-12T14:27:03","date_gmt":"2006-08-12T19:27:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/UnhinderedByTalent.com\/Phi\/?p=369"},"modified":"2006-08-12T14:31:16","modified_gmt":"2006-08-12T19:31:16","slug":"our-first-full-day-in-alaska-finished","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/UnhinderedByTalent.com\/Phi\/archives\/2006\/08\/12\/our-first-full-day-in-alaska-finished\/","title":{"rendered":"Our first full day in Alaska:  Finished"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;ve finally finished going through my pictures from our first full day in Alaska, which was the bus trip from Anchorage up to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/\">Denali National Park<\/a>, and a little hike that <a href=\"http:\/\/UnhinderedByTalent.com\/SubEvilBoy\/\">Sub-Evil Boy<\/a> and I took up to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/home\/visitorinfo\/activities\/dayhike.htm#horseshoe\">Horseshoe Lake<\/a> that evening.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nicmcphee\/203396733\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.flickr.com\/76\/203396733_a3f9f625a7.jpg?resize=400%2C106\" width=\"400\" height=\"106\" alt=\"Flying in Alaska\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Travel in Alaska (at least the parts we were in) is quite remarkable (esp. when blessed with such wonderful weather), as there are remarkable views around every corner.  The shot above, for example, was taken right through the front window of the bus as we drove north.  A bush pilot was kind enough to pose by the mountain here (you may need to see <a href=\"http:\/\/static.flickr.com\/76\/203396733_a3f9f625a7_b.jpg\">the larger version<\/a> to see the plane).  1 in 6 people in Alaska have their pilot&#8217;s license, and the small plane airport in Anchorage runs more flights than any other small plane airport in the U.S., and you hear people talk in idle conversation about flying like most Americans would talk about driving.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nicmcphee\/204531018\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.flickr.com\/61\/204531018_20ec978528.jpg?resize=400%2C266\" width=\"400\" height=\"266\" alt=\"Denali from McKinley Princess, right\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.alaskacoach.com\/\">Our bus<\/a> from Anchorage to Denali made a stop at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.princesslodges.com\/mckinley_lodge.cfm\">McKinley Princess Lodge<\/a> along the way.  Thanks to Mom&#8217;s weird gift with weather and mountain views, we had some spectacular views of Denali and the Alaska range from their deck, including the shot above.  (Mom always seems to get great views of mountains, even those reknowned for their reticence such as Fuji and Everest.  One of the <em>many<\/em> wonderful reasons to travel with her!)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nicmcphee\/205743353\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.flickr.com\/76\/205743353_f958e4047b.jpg?resize=400%2C116\" width=\"400\" height=\"116\" alt=\"The rowdy folks at the back of the bus\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Sub-Evil Boy was pretty darn exhausted after our very long day of travel getting to Alaska, and the early start to the bus trip.  After we left the lodge he officially gave up on being a tourist and lay out in the back (the bus was mostly empty) and slept most of the rest of the way to the Park.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/nicmcphee\/208741663\/\" title=\"Photo Sharing\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/static.flickr.com\/85\/208741663_52a53ddf66.jpg?resize=400%2C276\" width=\"400\" height=\"276\" alt=\"Hiking Horshoe Lake together\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>After we got to Denali, we had some food, sorted out our rental cars, got settled at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.denalidomehome.com\/\">our (quite wonderful) B&#038;B<\/a> in Healy (just outside the Park entrance), Sub-Evil and I went for a hike on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/home\/visitorinfo\/activities\/dayhike.htm#horseshoe\">Horseshoe Lake Trail<\/a> in the Park, while the rest of the family went to see the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nps.gov\/dena\/home\/visitorinfo\/kennels\/index.html\">kennels<\/a>.  We didn&#8217;t have long, but it was a nice little hike, and Sub-Evil enjoyed getting out of vans\/planes\/buses\/cars, stretching his legs and seeing a bit of Alaska without a window in the way.
