Coming home tonight I was listening to the 31 Oct <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciam.com\/podcast\/index.cfm?e_type=13\">Science Talk podcast<\/a> which features a fun interview with Susan Warren, author of the book <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html%3FASIN=1596912782%26tag=manalangcom-20%26lcode=xm2%26cID=2025%26ccmID=165953%26location=\/o\/ASIN\/1596912782%253FSubscriptionId=0EMV44A9A5YT1RVDGZ82\" title=\"View product details at Amazon\">Backyard Giants: The Passionate, Heartbreaking, and Glorious Quest to Grow the Biggest Pumpkin Ever<\/a>.  It would appear that some people out there that take their veggies <em>very<\/em> seriously.<\/p>\n<p>The world record weight for a pumpkin in 1980 was apparently around 500 pounds, but they&#8217;ve been smashing those records, with Joe Jutras setting a new record a few weeks ago of 1,689 pounds!  That&#8217;s a <em>serious<\/em> piece of fruit.  These are apparently large enough that they cut some of them in half to make kayaks and then have races with them.<\/p>\n<p>I definitely recommend the interview, and I&#8217;m guessing that the book is probably good as well.
