{"id":68,"date":"2005-02-22T14:41:24","date_gmt":"2005-02-22T20:41:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/UnhinderedByTalent.com\/Phi\/archives\/2005\/02\/22\/great-bbc-program-on-arthur-millers-field-recording-experience\/"},"modified":"2005-02-23T08:44:13","modified_gmt":"2005-02-23T14:44:13","slug":"great-bbc-program-on-arthur-millers-field-recording-experience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/UnhinderedByTalent.com\/Phi\/archives\/2005\/02\/22\/great-bbc-program-on-arthur-millers-field-recording-experience\/","title":{"rendered":"Great BBC program on Arthur Miller&#8217;s field recording experience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arthur Miller spent a few weeks just before Pearl Harbor doing field recording in the American south for the Library of Congress collecting accents.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio4\/\">BBC Radio 4<\/a> has an excellent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/radio4\/arts\/arthurmiller.shtml\">30 minute interview with Miller<\/a> where he tells stories about his (first) experiences in the South, the remarkable inequities that existed there at the time, and the great music he discovered.<\/p>\n<p>The following story really struck a chord.  Miller is being guided around by a health official named Dr. Vestal, and Miller has just called an older black worker &#8220;Sir&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nI came back and Dr. Vestal looked like he had been hit by a rock in the head.  He was <em>white<\/em> with anger.  He said &#8220;Mr. Miller, would you step outside for a moment?&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I walked outside and he said &#8220;You must <em>never<\/em> address them as &#8216;Sir&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>I said, &#8220;Well, what am I to call &#8217;em?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Boy&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Well the guy, the worker was about in his 50&#8217;s or older, and I was 24 or whatever the hell I was.  I couldn&#8217;t believe it.\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Sadly members of my family had a very similar experience shortly after moving to Wichita Falls, Texas, in the early 1960&#8217;s.
