Ghost Rider

Fun. Not great cinema but they clearly didn’t take themselves overly seriously and as a result this was amusing. Go for the ride, be entertained and get your weekly dose of popcorn. Eva Mendes really does need to fire her agent though. She’s clearly here to show of her breasts for all the adolescent males in the audience. How demeaning! Me, I just whiled away the time ‘admiring’ Wes Bentley’s attributes.

Visually stunning. Wow the visuals just blew me away but I hated with a passion the inherent racism. Makes you wonder if guys ever actually engage their brains as to what they are so obviously saying with pieces like this.

Ocean’s 13

Fluff. Very pretty fluff though. Much better than that home movie holiday video that was Twelve. Not as good as Eleven. Always love to see those familiar faces. Laughed numerous times. Cackled at the Oprah references. Enjoyed the pretty. The popcorn and soda went down nicely.

Shrek The Third

Boring. I laughed twice, may be. And someone thought this script was funny? Pull the other one.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3

Piratey. Lots and lots of pirates! In fact, everyone’s a pirate. Even you and me. Yo, ho, ho! The biggest saving grace of this movie was that it was way better than PoTC2. A huge sigh of relief from me as I didn’t fancy paying six bucks to spend three hours sleeping in uncomfortable seats at the local theatre. Don’t go see this movie if you’re looking for a decent screenplay and well thought out drama. This is an absolute riot and you just have to go with it. Silliness abounds but there’s much fun to be had, many beautiful things to see and action out the wazoo.

I particularly enjoyed the stone crabs, the marriage ceremony, and KK getting to squash her buckle.

There are plot holes galore, inappropriate dark themes and not much makes any kind of sense but I thought I got a pretty good deal from the whole shebang. I laughed out loud many times and I did not fall asleep once! High praise, indeed, these days. Though, as Mark Kermode might say Gore Verbinski is clearly part of the death of narrative cinema.

Valentina Lisitsa Piano Concert

We saw Valentina Lisitsa perform at the university recent and wow! Her playing was stunning. Just watching her hands more across the keyboard was an inspiration. While she played the fast sections with great precision I found the grace and control for slower sections even more impressive. Just watching her hands was artistry in motion. Stunning.

The programme she played was quite wide ranging in tone though did have a more modern feel to it. If she ever comes by your way she is definitely a must see.

Shooter

Okey dokey. A shoot ’em up that delivers on action but was not the most coherent screenplay. Gratuitous half naked female lead shots. Poor Kate Mara. Violence of the gratuitous kind. Basically gratuitous all the way around. Not the greatest movie of it’s type but was not a complete waste of space. Did rather like Michael Peña as the FBI agent though.

Spiderman 3

Boring. Bad script, bad acting, just bad all the way around. Pathetic bad guys. Action sequences that looked like video games and cut so quickly you couldn’t see a damn thing. I almost fell asleep multiple times. That’s a very bad sign. Basically it was bad. Don’t waste your hard earned cash. It’s not even worth the money for a dvd rental.

I should have realised something was up when the Sam Raimi interview with Simon Mayo and Mark Kermode on Fivelive was so awful. Talk about boring.

Kinky Boots

Amusing. Chiwetel Ejiofor’s performance as Lola, by itself, is worth the price of admission. He is absolutely fabulous in a part that ranges from outrageous humour to heart rending pathos. It’s a little slow at the start and I didn’t find our hero particularly appealing but Chewy just rocks, baby! You must rent this dvd.

The Mutant Variety Show

Before this is completely ancient news … last Thursday 5 April at 7pm, in the HFA Recital Hall was D-Day for Unhindered By Talent Productions.

Phi and the young’un hosted a wild night of music, song, improvisation, and dance. A stupendous entertainment performed by UMMers and their friends, all in aid of two cancer-related charities.

Lance Armstrong Foundation
Cancer Kids Fund of Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota

More than a hundred people made it to the show which raised more than $750 from donations that evening and on-line at the Lance Armstrong Foundation web page.

Our hosts performed many of their own songs as first seen at UMM Open Mic Nights and the ASA Talent Show including: Taco Man, Fat fly, and Crabgrass. Plus several covers including, Looking for my leopard and I’m so lonesome I could cry.

Even yours truly got in on the act, reading a number of short poems throughout the evening.

I’m assuming you can still add some pennies to the pot, here if the fancy moves you.

You can read more on the evening’s festivities here and the final accounting here.
