Happy Feet

Arrrrggggggg. Huge potential lost in the ‘message’. The animated dancing and singing penguins are fabulous. And for quite a while it’s rather cute. Then it seriously goes south in all sort of awful ways which I won’t detail ‘cos I really don’t want to relive it. Seriously, it’s a train wreck there at the end. You should still go and see it but forewarned is forearmed.

Flushed Away

Fun. Animation from Aardman and DreamWorks. Not as beautiful as the claymation but quite distracting. Humour from the British side of the pond which was enjoyable. Slugs rock!

The Pursuit of Happyness

Worthy. Will Smith’s performance is affecting as is that of his son. The film is definitely long in places, mainly because it has a habit of repeating itself just to make sure we got the message. Yes, we did get the message, loud and clear. Great choice of music on the soundtrack. The print we saw was very grainy, perhaps deliberately so?

That spelling in the title of this post is correct, watch the movie to find out why.

Little Miss Sunshine

Brilliant. Finally a movie I can unequivocally recommend you make every effort to see. This movie was such a great surprise; I’d been expecting to hate it given everything I’d read and seen about it. A great ensemble cast, there isn’t a performance out of place. The tone ranges from great sadness to outrageously laugh out loud humour. A wonderfully satisfying put down of beauty pagents. Definitely not for the kiddies or the overly sensitive.

The Black Dahlia

Sensual overload. If you have a thing for film noir this is the movie for you. Gorgeously filmed, it reeked 40s L.A. Visually stunning but, oh my god, absolutely stark raving bonkers in terms of plot and storylines. By the end, who knew what was going on, I certainly didn’t and I’m not sure Brian De Palma did either.

The Guardian

Pure popcorn. Yeah, it goes on too long and one might describe it as An Officer and a Gentleman Light but it was a good date movie and met all our expectations. Kevin Costner was great, stoically handsome and with an appropriately aged partner! Ashton Kutcher was Ashton Kutcher and pleasantly handsome. There were some great special effect action sequences that once again reminded us of what an appalling dangerous place the sea can be. Scared me silly in places.

2006 Classic Film Festival

Another autumn, another Classic Film Festival! This was the 8th year that we have organised this festival and it continues to go from strength to strength. Here’s this year’s line up.

Rosemary’s Baby The work of a young Polanski based on the novel by Ira Levin. Once a psychological scarefest, time and changing mores have affected how this movie is read. Surprisingly there were a lot more laughs than I’d been expecting.

White Christmas This was the big surprise for me. I only had dim memories of this movie. I’m pretty sure I saw this on tv when I was young. This film was hugely enjoyable, lots of humour, dancing and songs I recognised though anachronistic in places and clearly of it’s time. The opening, set in 1944 war torn Europe, was quite poignant.

Hud Stark and dark and a young dynamic Paul Newman. What more could you ask for? How about Patricia Neal firing on all cylinders?

To Catch a Thief This was the worst print of the four shown. We suspect it was from the original release back in 1955 and you could really see the wear and tear of a long and busy life. All the usual Hitchcock elements were here and we went along for a great ride. The age difference between Grant and Kelly was a little disturbing. Sadly, movie makers are still casting older men in romantic relationships with young women. Clearly the actress playing Kelly’s mum would have made a more appropriate relationship for Mr. Grant.

A little civic participation

Phi and I will send the following letter to the editor of the University Register in the next few days.

At the election on Tuesday, 7th November you will have the opportunity to vote for members of the Morris Area School Board. We would encourage you to cast your vote for Eric Buchanan and Lory Lemke.

Both Eric and Lory have experience as professional educators; Eric has taught high school mathematics and Lory has taught philosophy here at UMM. With this experience they know what it is to be at the sharp end of the educational process and can bring that understanding to the Board. Both men also volunteer time within the Morris Area School District, providing enrichment opportunities for children at both elementary and secondary levels.

The Buchanan and Lemke families both have children in the Morris public schools. Any decisions they make as school board members will affect their families directly and not just be about “other people’s children”.

The entire UMM community has a vested interest in the outcome of this election, as the quality of the local schools has a powerful impact on our ability to recruit and retain excellent faculty and staff. We believe that both Eric and Lory will make excellent board members, with a strong emphasis on educational excellence and extra curricular enrichment.

Please vote Tuesday, 7th November 2006.

Is the shine wearing off google

So I’m a google kinda gal and almost never use any other search engine but given their capitulation to the Chinese authorities, breaking their own motto of ‘do no evil’, I’m less inclined to be monogamous. So I had this question, which I typed into google

how to lace a pair of shoes

I got a lot of entries from people wanting to sell me shoes but no one answering my question. There was one link that talked about lacing athletic shoes but that was no help. So I went to ask.com. I got a whole page of people telling me how to lace my shoes. I went to Lace Your Shoes for Walking Comfort and found some really great diagrams that showed me exactly what I needed to do.

I clearly need to play the field more. That makes me sad.

Weather is in two minds!

Autumn in Morris 02 (P1010041)

So I took this picture Sunday morning. I was hanging out in the kitchen in my sleepwear and the light/warmth coming through the window tempted me to go out and snap some shots. The sky was so bright and blue. Grass was sprouting in the dug up lawn by the house where we’d had some construction work done. My bare legs didn’t feel cold at all.

Yesterday we had multiple white outs!!!!

Not much snow fell, more like a dusting but once that wind gets going you can’t see a thing. Talk about cold. I seriously contemplated wintercoatdom but couldn’t do it. Who wears their winter coat in October? Sheesh.

Check out that temperature below!
