Predictable. Isn’t Mr Ford getting a little old for this sort of thing? Nice to see Chloe from 24 in a movie although what the hell was happening with her hair, who knows! Pedestrian and by the numbers, with Brit bad guy, even I could write this script. (There was some compensatory eye candy in among the bad guys so it was not a completely wasted two hours.)

Girls and their toys!

Why should the boys have all the fun? Phi just acquired a digital SLR and is now ‘borrowing’ my Canon lens to test drive his new camera before committing to a particular lens.

Having got a little fed up with having to lug around my Canon EOS with it’s zoom lens if I wanted to take pictures I’ve invested in an itsy bitsy tiny weeny digital camera, that weighs barely anything, and fits neatly into my bag with all my other stuff. A Panasonic DMC-FX9 to be exact and boy is it tiny! Scarily so. I had intended to buy a FX8, but since the FX9 was out and still sounded good in the online reviews I found, I went for the newer model. Here’s a photo from my first test drive. (Autoflash was on and there’s been no tweaking of the image.)

Peony by front door

There were a couple of reasons for my choice that mostly came from watching Nic with his Canon Powershot A80.

  • The view finder was a waste of time and you might as well devote as much real estate as you could to the LCD screen.
  • It needed to be fast, no siginificant pause between pressing the buton and the photo being taken.
  • It needed software that’d handle camera shake effectively.

It looks like the Panasonic handles these with aplomb.

Now I can embark on an epic adventure, where I learn all there is to know about how to use this amazing little gadget to it’s full potential.

And did I mention how fricking small it is?

Good Night and Good Luck

Brilliant. A great movie that lost out on Oscar night. An intelligent look at a historic event that has a lot to tell us today. Filming in black and white was an astute choice and the visuals are stunning. The use of interludes with the singer Dianne Reeves made for some pointed transitions. The cast was great and I thought letting Joseph McCarthy speak for himself was right on the money. Hoist by his own petard. George Clooney is such a talented guy!

Google.com is having way too much fun today

You really should check out google’s latest product

To quote from their page

With Google Romance, you can:

* Upload your profile – tell the world who you are, or, more to the point, who you’d like to think you are, or, even more to the point, who you want others to think you are.
* Search for love in all (or at least a statistically significant majority of) the right places with Soulmate Search, our eerily effective psychographic matchmaking software.
* Endure, via our Contextual Dating option, thematically appropriate multimedia advertising throughout the entirety of your free date.

The site is a hoot and had Phi and me in stitches.

Turq is no more

Sadly, Turq has finally bowed to the inevitable and met his end. After so many years of evading the grim reaper, his houdini-like talent for confounding the experts failed him. Twelve years wasn’t a bad run given his inclinations. Who else goes one-on-one with a car and expects to survive? He was well served by his genes which kept him alive and fairly well when others would fall by the wayside. Luckily, we have a raft of wild and crazy stories to remember him by. (Plus some very cute kitten photos with a baby Sub Evil Boy.) Like his penchant for adopting a dog-like alterego, hooking up with local kids and following them home from the park. We’d get calls from all over town asking us to retrieve him. Sniff …

Time will tell how Portia reacts to his absence. She’s been having a few problems herself lately. She’s becoming the grand old lady of the house and nothing quite works as it should. She has developed what the vet thinks is a psychosomatic habit of pulling her fur out as a reaction to some sort of stress event. There are two bald stripes developing along her spine. Other than the hair pulling she doesn’t appear to be unhappy so we’re not sure what the trigger was. The vet has suggested a course of valium or perhaps Prozac. We’re currently taking a wait and see approach as Portia doesn’t seem to be hurting herself and we’re hoping as the weather gets better and she can go outside her symptoms will subside.

Eight Below

Enjoyable. A great family movie with wonderful scenery and intelligent, well-trained dogs. The plot may have been a little predictable but I enjoyed being along for the emotional ride. You’ll need to have your hankie with you when you watch this. The dogs rocked!

The Strange Case of …

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde was the last event in the current season of the performing arts series.

This production was performed by the Aquila Theatre and was based on the book by
Robert Louis Stevenson and the life of American actor, Richard Mansfield. The production was stunning. The choreography of lighting, music, set design, and skillful acting was superb and it has got to be one of my favourite performing arts events. A great combination of hunour and drama.

If you get a chance to see this production, or the Aquila Theatre company, I highly recommend it.

Sub-evil Boy had the great good fortune to attend the Aquila Theatre company’s masterclass at the U earlier in the day and had a fantastic time. Many thanks to Jay Painter for making it such a great experience for our son!

Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were Rabbit

Gromit rules! Great romp and loved watching out for all the great visual jokes and puns. I think their full length features need to be 70 rather than 90 minutes as they get a little stretched in places. So glad to see them win their Oscar, loved the bow ties.

As for JK baulking at use of the word marrow, PA-LEEEZE. Does he really think American’s are so dumb they can’t work out what one is from the visual clue?

Nanny McPhee

Enjoyable. A fun family movie with my favourite Mr Darcy! You know it’s all going to come right in the end but it’s great to go along for the ride to see how it all works out. I feel rather sad for Nanny McPhee though.

Where I’ve been in the States

Given that I’ve only lived this side of the pond 16 years, I’m not doing so bad on my state tally. 70% and counting. Of the main land 48 I’ve really only missed the east coast.
