Kiwanis Talent Show

Sub Evil Boy took part in the fourth and final heat of the Kiwanis Talent Show this evening. There were only four acts participating, 3 singers and a dance troupe.

Sub Evil Boy sang two songs a cappella, Fat Fly, a song he wrote with his dad and Worms a traditional little ditty that he had heard on a Pogues CD.

A third place finish didn’t earn him any prize money but it did qualify him for the grand final that will be held Friday 8th July during Prairie Pionneer Days.

Back dated post. (7th July temperature 86F/30C (Heat Index 90F/32C))

We’re back!

After a three week toddle around the UK, we’re back stateside. Hopefully when I’ve caught up with all the stuff that needs taking care of I’ll put up some posts on our adventures. Most will probably be backdated.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

Not bad. As a fan of the original radio show I suppose all other versions of HGttG pale into obscurity by comparison. While I adore Stephen Fry, and think Harry Potter sounds fabulous when he reads it, he’s just not Peter Jones.

There are quite a few fun moments and the movie passes the time nicely if not particularly, ‘oh wow!’. My favourite moment is when the improbability drive kicks in and they all end up as wool dolls. Arthur Dent throwing up wool is timeless!

The Interpreter

Disappointing. With all the talent involved in this movie you’d have thought they could have made something better than this. So much of the movie was quite predictable that I was not sitting on the edge of my seat wondering what would happen next.

The best sequence involved a series of characters and story lines all intersecting on a bus. This sequence was incredibly tense and emotionally involving and demonstrated how short the movie fell from its potential.

Yuckiest moment of the movie was when the tall willowy white woman tells the older black president how he’s failed his country and what a disappointment he’s been. Yuck, yuck, yuck. What were they thinking?

Kung Fu Hustle

Wild. Way over the top and stereotypes abound but the fight scenes are incredible. Best use of a musical instrument in a fight scene. Would recommend highly for the visuals and the wacky sense of humour. Not to be taken too seriously.

Dancing the Night Away

Last Friday, the studio where I’ve been learning to tap had its end of year dance recital at UMM’s HFA recital hall. I wasn’t sure how I’d do in front of an audience and whether nerves would affect our routine but everything turned out fine. Both Janet and I had a great time and enjoyed watching all the other dancers perform their routines. The audience was wonderfully supportive of all the dancers which was a huge help.

Check out the article Nic posted at thomasmcphee.com you’ll find a link there to photos from the show.

Depression descends

In a rash mood of I-don’t-know-what I subscribed to watch the F.A. Cup final yesterday on pay-per-view. Sadly the wrong team won. Man United were clearly the better team, unfortunately their finishing skills left a lot to be desired.

This article gives you an idea of the current situation at Old Trafford.

You should be doing this too!

After checking out the pictures, I’ve just added Extreme Ironing to my ‘to do’ list along with

  • climb Mount Everest
  • swim the English Channel
  • score the F.A. Cup winner.

I’ve nothing but undying admiration for these guys, especially for those working underwater. Wow, the risks they take. Their insurance costs must run in the millions.

Clearly I’ve been missing out on the real fun! Many thanks to Hafren for the heads up.
