The US Supreme Court has ruled that it is &#8216;cruel and unusual&#8217; to execute 16 and 17 year olds.  For a little more detail check out this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/cgi-bin\/article.cgi?f=\/n\/a\/2005\/03\/01\/national\/w071209S15.DTL\">article<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Must say I&#8217;m surprised given the support for punitive punishment over here.  Let&#8217;s hope we can keep moving in this direction and remove the death penalty permanently.  It doesn&#8217;t work as a deterrent, it&#8217;s applied in a discriminatory way and the risk of killing an innocent person is too high to justify its use.
